REASON FOR ONLINE SCHOOL: COVID-19

About Alex

Alex is a 7th grade student at Oregon Charter Academy. When the Covid-19 pandemic began, Alex’s brick-and-mortar school went temporarily online. Alex is immunocompromised, so his parents knew that they didn’t want him to return to brick-and-mortar school, and they started looking for different options and found Oregon Charter Academy. Alex loves ORCA because there are plenty of opportunities to socialize wIth peers but remain safe and healthy.

Alex’s Schedule

Alex is enrolled in 3 Core courses, 3 electives, and 2 supplemental courses at Oregon Charter Academy, which is standard for his age. Some of these courses meet live multiple times per week; others meet only once per week. When Alex is not attending Live Class, there is other assigned work for him to complete asynchronously.

In addition to his standard courses, Alex is also enrolled in the Writing Club, an optional club that he joined to explore his interest in writing. View Alex’s live class schedule below.

A Typical Day

Live Classes are only a part of a student’s day at Oregon Charter Academy. In our program, students complete much of their work asynchronously, on their own schedule. They can reach out to their teachers for one-on-one support whenever they need it. Continue reading to see what Alex’s daily schedule typically looks like!

DAY OF THE WEEK: WEDNESDAY

  • Alex wakes up around 8 most days. He gets dressed and makes himself breakfast.

  • Alex likes to start the day slowly, so he spends the first hour of his day reading his choice reading book for Humanities 7.

  • Alex’s first Live Classes of the day are always at 10 (except on Fridays, when he doesn’t have Live Classes). Today he has Math class. There’s a 15 minute meeting with his BOOST teacher right before class to help him work through some new material, and then he joins the Live Class with his classmates.

  • There’s a half hour break before his next Live Class, so Alex stretches and has a snack.

  • Alex’s next class is Science. They’re doing an experiment today, so he joins the Zoom class and observes the experiment, taking notes as he watches.

  • After class, Alex takes a break for lunch.

  • On Wednesdays, Alex has PE class at 1. They do a leg workout and talk about their exercise for the week.

  • Right after PE, there’s a Writing Club meeting. Alex loves writing and has been working on a short story. He shares the story with the club and they give constructive feedback, and then he talks with his friends about some of the writing projects they’ve been working on.

  • Alex takes another quick break, and then finishes his classwork for the day. He has a project for Science, a Humanities quiz, and a Math assignment. Together, these take him about 2 hours.

  • Alex has finished up his work for the day, so he logs off and goes outside!
