Our Middle School Curriculum

Whether students enter sixth grade from our elementary school program or other institutions, Oregon Charter Academy strives to build upon the foundation of early education by refining core skills and introducing more advanced concepts. This period of transition between elementary and high school allows students to begin considering college and careers as they develop interests that will carry beyond their school years. Our middle school curriculum includes:

HUMANITIES

Our humanities curriculum combines language arts and social studies to demonstrate connections between key areas of learning and build critical communication skills. Coursework emphasizes language use, including reading, writing, and listening, and focuses on history, geography, government, economics, and culture with a global perspective.

MATHEMATICS

Building upon elementary mathematics concepts and skills, our middle school math curriculum addresses numerical operations, measurement, geometry, and introductory concepts in data analysis. The pre-algebra curriculum helps ready students for the demands of high-school-level mathematics.

SCIENCES

Scientific education answers a growing need for STEM capabilities and promotes reasoning and critical thinking. Grounded in earth, space, physical, life, and environmental sciences, this curriculum addresses broad-based subject matter across disciplines. Course materials are organized within thematic units to connect important topics.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH

At the middle school level, physical education centers on the importance of an active lifestyle and opportunities for social growth. Students are encouraged to build strength, endurance, and flexibility while developing safe techniques in a variety of sports. Health instruction addresses timely questions for middle school students with a focus on healthy lifestyles, sexual education, and substance abuse avoidance.

ART AND ELECTIVES

Our diverse roster of electives allows each student to pursue academic paths that may inspire career choices and lifelong interests. Available options include:

  • Foreign languages

  • College preparation

  • Traditional and digital arts

  • Game design and coding

ALTERNATIVE CURRICULUM

To support students seeking an Alternative Certificate, our Alternative Curriculum focuses on the skills needed for successful living. Students explore a variety of essential topics, including decision-making, time management, finance, wellness, transportation, nutrition, and more.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

To assist non native English speakers seeking enrollment in our standard curriculum, the English as a Second Language (ESL) program supports rapid acquisition and mastery of English language skills. Students engage in intensive reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities while learning more about diverse cultures throughout the United States.

CAREERS AND ADVISORY

Students work with advisors to discover aptitudes, interests, and goals that will inform decisions about secondary coursework. They also further refine study, research, and test-taking skills while developing problem-solving and logic.
