Dean: 11th Grade ASCEND

REASON FOR ONLINE SCHOOL: ASCEND

About Dean

Dean is an 11th grade student in the ASCEND program at Oregon Charter Academy. He wasn’t thriving at his brick-and-mortar middle school, so his parents enrolled him at Oregon Charter Academy. He joined the ASCEND program to pursue his interest in Computer Science. He enjoys the flexibility of the online classroom, is better able to focus without the distractions of a physical classroom, and loves the material he is learning through the ASCEND program. Dean thrives at Oregon Charter Academy.

Dean’s Schedule

Dean is enrolled in 4 Core courses and 2 electives at Oregon Charter Academy. Some of these courses meet live multiple times per week; others meet only once per week. When Dean is not attending Live Class, there is other assigned work for him to complete asynchronously.

In addition to his standard courses, Dean is also enrolled in the Computer Science pathway of the ASCEND program (link: /ASCEND-home), and the Gamer’s Lounge, a student-run club for students interested in video games. Dean’s live class schedule is below.

A Typical Day

Live Classes are only a part of a student’s day at Oregon Charter Academy. In our program, students complete much of their work asynchronously, on their own schedule. They can reach out to their teachers for one-on-one support whenever they need it. Continue reading to see what Dean’s daily schedule typically looks like!

DAY OF THE WEEK: WEDNESDAY

  • Dean is not an early riser, so one of the things he loves most about ORCA is the flexibility of his schedule. His first class on Wednesdays isn’t until noon, so he sleeps in until 10:30, then gets up, gets dressed, and eats breakfast.

  • He’s still waking up, so Dean starts a new video game for the first hour of his day.

  • Dean logs into Canvas and attends his CTE Integrated Business Math II class. Today they’re learning about computing interest.

  • Right after class, he starts on his math homework. He gets the first few questions right, but gets a little confused at the last questions. He sets it aside for later.

  • At 2 Dean has his favorite class, Cybersecurity. It’s a part of the ASCEND Computer Science pathway, which Dean applied for his freshman year.

  • After class Dean has a late lunch, and then gets started on his classwork. He has a quiz for American Government and Econ, some reading for Language Arts 11, and a Spanish assignment, as well as the math homework from earlier.

  • At 4, it’s his Business Math teacher’s open office hours, so he joins the Zoom. Other students were also having some trouble with the last assignment problems, so the teacher goes over the concept again and explains how it applies to those problems.

  • After the office hours, Dean is able to finish up the last of his math assignment. He double checks that there’s nothing else due today, then signs off for the night.
