How a Mid-Year Transfer to an Oregon Online School Can Give Your Student a Fresh Start

January is a month for reflection and charting new directions in life. For many families in Oregon, this includes their children’s educational experiences. If the first half of the school year has been challenging, you may be considering a mid-year transfer to an online school.

As an online public charter school, Oregon Charter Academy (ORCA) has helped parents across the state navigate these significant decisions for more than twenty years. Every student has unique needs, and many students thrive after transferring to an Oregon online school. Here are a few questions to consider as you begin answering this question for yourself.

Can You Transfer to an Online School Mid-Year in Oregon?

Yes, your child can transfer to an online school midyear. At Oregon Charter Academy, the enrollment process begins when a parent or guardian fills out the application form on our website. It includes basic information like your child’s name, birthday, and address.

After you’ve submitted your application, a member of our enrollment team will contact you to talk more about the transfer process. During the call, they’ll review the steps in our enrollment process and answer any questions you may have. You’ll need to assemble a few documents to include with your application, including items like proof of residency, recent academic records, and certain medical information.

Our goal is to make a mid-year transfer to an online school as seamless as possible for everyone in your entire family. Feel free to ask questions, express concerns, and share what you hope your student will gain from this change. The more information we have, the more we’ll be able to help you make the best decision for your family.

When Does a Mid-Year Transfer Make Sense?

Students who make a mid-year transfer to an online school often share several of the same experiences. Some students don’t feel safe in their brick-and-mortar classrooms. They may be victims of bullying behavior from fellow students, or they may be sensitive to the fights and disruptions that can occur. Online schools, like Oregon Charter Academy, allow these students to attend classes in a safe, supportive virtual environment with a strong anti-bullying culture.

Another group of students experience physical or mental health challenges that make attending in-person classes difficult. Enrolling in an online school in Oregon enables these students to continue receiving a high-quality education from the safety of their own homes.

A third group of students comes to ORCA because the schools in their home districts aren’t offering them what they need. For instance, a robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program like our ASCEND program, which offers several different pathways. Others appreciate our College Now, Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses that give them a jumpstart into higher education. Some choose ORCA because of our award-winning special education program, which honors students' individualized education plans (IEPs) or 504 plans.

These students all benefit from the individualized approach we take to education so that every Oregon Charter Academy student can thrive in their unique way.

How an Oregon Online School Can Offer a Fresh Start

Over our 20-year history, we’ve built a unique online learning community that new students find refreshing. Our culture is shaped by our staff, who have chosen to work in an online environment because they believe in what our curriculum can do for Oregon Charter Academy students.

They form a strong support network for each student, including homeroom teachers for grades K-5 and advisory teachers for middle and high school students. These staff members help all our students thrive in an online environment and receive any additional support they need. Many of our students aren’t used to receiving this much attention from teachers and find it very helpful as they continue at ORCA.

Another unique component of our curriculum is a focus on flexibility and independent learning. While our students do have regular opportunities for synchronous learning with their teachers and classmates, they complete most of the coursework asynchronously and in a learning environment tailored to them. This is a revelation for many students accustomed to in-person instruction, which often doesn’t cater to those who fall outside the so-called educational norms.

When strong staff support meets the freedom and flexibility of an online learning environment, the difference for many students is profound. They discover a new love of learning and thrive in school in ways they never have before.

What to Expect When Transferring Mid-Year

If you do decide to transfer to an online school mid-year, there will be an adjustment period. You and your student will receive a welcome call from your student’s advisory teacher to connect about getting started. Then their new teachers will help them quickly get up to speed with their assignments. They’ll also stay connected to ensure your student is acclimating well to their new learning environment.

You’ll also need to make a few adjustments at home. Your student will need to establish a dedicated learning space where they can attend classes and work on homework. They’ll also need a dedicated learning coach who can support their schoolwork at home.

This job will be more involved for younger students, who require more supervision and hands-on work. As students get older, learning coaches should stay engaged by communicating with teachers and checking their students’ Canvas accounts to ensure they’re up to date on assignments.

There may be a few bumps in the road, but a mid-year transfer to an online school will be worth the extra effort in the long run.

Is an Online School in Oregon Right for Your Child?

Every family is different. However, if your student is experiencing anxiety, displaying behavioral issues, struggling to succeed academically, or doesn’t feel like they’re being sufficiently challenged, transferring to an online public charter school could be the right change at the right time. Students who enjoy technology or are naturally independent will likely also be a good fit in a virtual school.
